3 Poems About Poison That Frighten Us

Poison is not generally something that anyone wants to think about, right? It’s a bit scary, a bit spooky, and generally not what we want to have in our minds. However, it is a sure and certain fact that posion does exist in the world – and what better way to acknowledge this than by reading poems about poison?

Poison can be scary, it’s true. But then, a whole lot of life can be pretty scary too, right? One of the best ways we can explore our relationship with the world is through words, and learning. So, why not explore poison as well, in the form of poetry? It can help us to feel more comfortable; to educate ourselves; to learn to laugh a little about the things that may frighten us. Plus, there are some really good stories that involve poison – so let’s delve into the world of poems about poison!

You can find a great range of poems in this genre, from the scary ones to the ones that poke fun and help you to laugh about your fears. Who knows, maybe you could even come across a poem that helps you get over any worries you have about poison. Exposing ourselves to things that frighten us can help us to feel more comfortable about them, and poems are a lovely bite-sized way of achieving this.

You may even become inspired, and want to branch out into your own writing! Giving a set of poems to someone who is interested in the subject matter is a sweet way to connect with them. If there is someone in your life – or even you yourself – who is fascinated by the world of poisons, look into a bit of poetry. After all, you can’t go around giving gifts of poison to people, so poems are a much nicer – and safer – way of sharing.

Poisonous Snakes

Author: S. Ellis

In jungles deep and deserts wide,
Where shadows creep and secrets hide,
A slither stirs the silent ground—
A snake is near, without a sound.
Its eyes are sharp, its tongue flicks fast,
A ghostly whisper as it passed.
Its scales like jewels in sunlit glade,
But danger lies in beauty’s shade.
A single bite, so swift, unseen,
Can turn the strongest shade of green.
With venom laced in every fang,
It strikes so quick—you feel the pang.
The cobra flares its mighty hood,
A silent warning: “Leave, you should.”
The viper waits in coils tight,
Then launches forth with deadly bite.
From rattlesnake with tail that sings,
To taipans known for fatal stings,
They rule their realm with silent grace—
A flick, a strike, a vanishing trace.
Yet snakes don't bite unless they're pressed,
They strike in fear, not to aggress.
Respect their space, and you shall find
These lethal beasts will not be unkind.
So heed this rhyme when in their land,
With careful step and cautious hand.
For though they bear a deadly name,
They play no part in reckless game.

Poison Ivy

Author: T. Priest

A camper once brushed a green tree,
Its leaves were in clusters of three.
He started to itch,
Then scratch every stitch—
“Next time,” he swore, “I’ll just let it be!”

The Ballad of the Midnight Meal

Author: W. Hemingway

I wandered home one stormy night,
With hunger in my chest,
I searched the fridge for something quick—
Leftovers seemed best.
There sat a stew from days gone by,
Still tempting in its bowl,
It smelled a bit... mysterious,
But hunger took control.
I warmed it up, I took a bite,
Then sighed with deep delight,
I praised my luck and licked my spoon—
Unaware of my plight.
But soon my belly gave a moan,
A twist, a turn, a churn,
My joy became a growing fear,
Too late, I’d failed to learn.
The room began to softly spin,
My face turned pale and cold,
I clutched the sink and gasped aloud,
“My God, that stew was old!”
I spent the night in tortured groans,
A prisoner of my gut,
With promises to never trust
A fridge that will not shut.
Oh, food can be a friend so sweet,
But left too long, beware—
It turns from feast to bitter foe
With vengeance none can bear.
So hear my tale, you late-night snackers,
With appetites so bold,
Check dates, use noses, trust your gut—
And never eat it cold!
